Youth of the Year

We are extremely proud to announce the 2014 Youth of the Year is Darnell Wheeler, Jr.! Darnell is 17 and a senior at South High School. In 2005, he became a refugee of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He plans to study pre-law and business administration at the University of Wyoming. He would like to be a Judge Advocate General in the United States Air Force and then own a law firm or counseling center. As our Youth of the Year, Darnell received a gift card to Best Buy and a $5,000 scholarship. He will go on to compete at the state competition in February where he is eligible for additional scholarships.

Ethan Smith was named our 2014 Junior Youth of the Year. Ethan is 11 years old and says the Club helped him come out of his shell and meet new friends who push him to be the best he can be. The Junior Youth of the Year candidates each received a gift card to Barns & Noble.

Youth of the Year is a Boys & Girls Club program that recognizes and awards kids who have overcome significant obstacles in their lives and come through with strong character and maturity. As part of the competition, candidates write and give speeches.

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding young men and all of the candidates this year. These kids are on their way to GREAT FUTURES

The Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne is in the process of building a brand new facility for our Club! We have moved into the gymnasium at our new site, located atWalterscheid and Jefferson in south Cheyenne. We are running Club operations out of the gym while we continue to work to raise funds for the Clubhouse itself. Moving into the gym has increased our square footage indoors as well as allowing us to use our grassy fields, basketball and volleyball courts, picnic shelters, garden, playground and more. It has also improved our access to schools, putting us within walking distance of eight schools. Once complete, the new facility will easily double our capacity for members.
